[-'maɪra], Witi, neuseeländischer Schriftsteller, * Gisborne 7. 2. 1944; führender Vertreter der Maori-Renaissance-Bewegung der frühen 70er-Jahre, setzt sich besonders für das literarische Erbe seiner Vorfahren ein (Herausgeber der Anthologie »Into the world of light«, 1982). Sein eigenes Werk, das mythologische und realistische Elemente verbindet, behandelt v. a. die Beziehung zwischen Maori und Weißen.
 
Werke: Romane: Tangi (1973); Whanau (1974); The matriarch (1986); The whale rider (1988).
 
Erzählungen: Pounamu, Pounamu (1972); The new net goes fishing (1977).
